What to Visit in Sologne? Our Must-Sees

Travel Inspirations
Written by the Sandaya team

For a rural break, head for the beautiful Sologne in the Centre-Val de Loire region. Whether you're a nature lover, wanting to escape modern life or simply slow down for a few days, the Sologne will definitely enchant you with its relaxing, natural setting and its countless treasures! Let’s go and visit the Sologne!

The most beautiful natural sites in the Sologne

Nature is so gorgeous in the Sologne! With its dense forests full of amazing wildlife and its numerous wetlands, the Sologne offers a real breath of fresh air to city dwellers. On foot or by bike, it's time to discover this green oasis in the Loir-et-Cher!

On the ground, if you come during the King of the forest's mating season, you might have the chance to see and hear a unique, impressive experience: the bellowing of the stags! The rest of the year, the hinds and bucks, birds, plants and heaths put on a magnificent display of the beauty of nature in the Centre-Val de Loire region

On the water, as a family or couple, discover the wetlands of the Sologne, a refuge for many bird species such as the great egret, one of the largest herons in Europe. Learn more about these sources of life in the Sologne at the Maison des Etangs museum.

The iconic châteaux of the Sologne

Château de Chambord

It's impossible to spend a holiday in the Loire Valley without exploring its heritage and visiting its famous châteaux, starting with the best known of all: the Château de Chambord. This historical masterpiece, built in the 16th century and designed by Leonardo da Vinci (no less), is worth a detour for more than one reason. You’ll be blown away by its astonishing style blending French and Italian influences, its totally unique double spiral staircase, its roof-terraces and surrounding gardens. Sumptuous and unmissable!

Château de Cheverny

Another essential château to visit in the Sologne, the Château de Cheverny, bears a resemblance to Marlinspike Hall in the Adventures of Tintin... that’s because the author, Hergé, used it as inspiration for the residence of Captain Haddock! Stroll through its gardens, roam through its richly decorated salons and be amazed by this magnificent 17th century building, well worth a visit.

Château de Blois

A blend of several styles, from flamboyant Gothic to Renaissance, the Château de Blois was the favourite residence of the French Kings. No fewer than 10 Queens and 7 Kings have stayed there! Don’t miss this historical jewel, its royal apartments and ornate galleries. It also has lovely views over Blois and the surrounding area, which only adds to its charm!

Top leisure activities to do in the Sologne

Get out your walking boots and your bikes and discover the Sologne outdoors! As a family, go for a bike ride along the Canal de la Sauldre, unique in France as it's not connected to any other waterway!

Prefer to walk? Follow one of the hiking trails that snake through the Sologne: the one in the Malzoné nature reserve is ideal if you’re a Sunday walker and keen birdwatcher, while the Giraudière or Clancheuse circuit (leaving from Pierrefitte-sur-Sauldre), are more suitable for experienced hikers.

The Sologne and the local cuisine

We don't say it often enough, but you can't truly explore a destination unless you try the cuisine. In the Sologne, your tastebuds will zing with pleasure at all the local specialities, starting with Tarte Tatin! This caramelised fruit tart was invented in the Sologne, in Lamotte-Beuvron to be exact, by the Tatin sisters! Eat as much as you want - or nearly!

Savoury dishes such as game, fish, asparagus, cheese, wine and even caviar (yes, that’s right!) will also be on the menu during your holiday in the Sologne, along with indulgence and surprise!

Where to stay in the Sologne: choose a luxury campsite!

Discovering the Sologne is a no-brainer! But where can you stay in the Sologne? On a luxury campsite of course, more specifically at Les Alicourts campsite in Pierrefitte-sur-Sauldre.

Why here? For its green surroundings, water park with heated, covered pool, private swimming lake and spa with balneo area, hammam and sauna!

So there you go, now you know everything (or nearly everything) about the treasures of the beautiful Sologne. So for your next long or short trip, choose the Sologne for a natural, cultural break that will do you a power of good!
